At LoveReading4Kids, we believe that reading for pleasure changes lives - and that no single organisation can do this work alone.
Our Literacy Partners are the charities, organisations and initiatives working across the UK to help children discover the joy, confidence and opportunity that reading brings. Together, we form a connected network supporting families, schools and communities to nurture the next generation of readers.
We are delighted to welcome the Doorstep Library, a community-focused literacy charity dedicated to bringing the magic of books and the joy of reading directly into the homes of children who need support. They are intent on breaking the link between poverty and low literacy, using the power of stories to change children’s lives. To do this, Doorstop Library recruits and trains volunteers to work directly with families in their homes – or on the doorstep – to create a foundation of reading for pleasure within the home which families can build upon long term. The volunteers are led by paid staff who work from bases within the local community or online during term time several evenings a week, coordinating each project and supporting volunteers as they read with their families. From beginning in 2010, with one project and four volunteers, they now run 16 reading projects across five London boroughs and have over 170 volunteers. See information on volunteering here
Working with children aged 0-11 living in London and their families, their mission is to support children living in under-resourced areas to become keen and confident readers; to support parents to take an active role in reading for pleasure with their children; and to support families to connect to a wider range of cultural, social and support services.
For their upcoming 15th anniversary in June 2026, Doorstep Library will be participating in The Childhood Trust and the Big Give’s annual Champions for Children campaign, which raises funds for charities working to alleviate the impact of poverty on London children. They've set an ambitious goal of raising £60,000 - half from online donations and half from pledges of match funding made by partners.
