"Award-winning Nicola Davies captures a child’s perception of the arrival of a new child in the school"
A Julia Eccleshare Pick of the Month June 2021
In a spare, poetic text, Nicola Davies shows how easy it is to label someone as ‘different’ and how easy it is to treat them badly once that has been done. But she also shows how a new child can turn that hostility round by introducing the special things from her own life. Cathy Fisher’s illustrations capture the powerful but understated point of the story perfectly making this apparently quiet book speak volumes.

Bullying, acceptance and inclusion are the themes in the latest story from award-winning author and illustrator team Nicola Davies and Cathy Fisher.

Bullying, acceptance and inclusion are the themes in the latest story from award-winning author and illustrator team Nicola Davies and Cathy Fisher. The latest picture book from Nicola Davies and Cathy Fisher, The New Girl, explores the importance of understanding others and how differences of race, culture and nationality can bring people together rather than drive them apart. The narrator of The New Girl tells how she and her classmates get caught up in making the life of the new girl in school a misery. However, the subject of their bullying responds in an amazing and creative way that makes the bullies see her as a person and value what she brings into their lives. The new girl is beginning school in a new country, where she founds that the children in her class are unfriendly towards her; refusing to include her because of her strange lunches, her unfamiliar clothing and her inability to understand their language.
