"Wisdom and inspiration to seek your own happiness from a gold medal winning athlete."
August 2024 Debut of the Month
Publishing just before the onset of the Paris Olympics, this motivational guide aimed at 9-11 year olds, will be bound to attract interest since the author, Paralympic champion and "Strictly Come Dancing" star Jonnie Peacock, will be endeavouring to add to his gold medal collection. Whilst it will speak most directly to children learning to live with their own differences or to those with sporting ambitions, it has much to offer us all.
Written in collaboration with child mental health expert Laura Earnshaw, the emphasis is very much on building a positive ‘growth’ mindset and to find your happiness. The emphasis is on the uniqueness of every individual and the necessity to work out what your dreams and ambitions are.
In the introduction the author explains that throughout the book there will be activities: ‘Happiness Hacks’ and Rest Stops. The latter encourages the reader to reflect upon what they have just read and are prompted to consider what it means for them and to write it down. This is all part of your very own ’Race Plan’.
Each chapter is a ‘lap’ and at the end of the book there is a complete summary of each Rest Stop writing prompt. The reason for this is that in the final chapter it talks about paying it forward and offering the same support to others, sharing what you have learned, but I can also see this summary being very useful for PSHE discussions!
Laura Earnshaw offers some useful additional exercises at the back of the book. I will certainly be making use of the Sleep Activities!
With a lively humorous voice, fast facts and inspirational quotes, snippets of other famous lives as well as Jonnie’s personal story and enhanced by Ashwin Chacko’s lively drawings and engaging layout, this is a great addition to self help collections. But please note that there are blank journal pages for building your individual race plan and although he does say ‘don’t write in the book if its from the library’, this might not be obeyed!
