Haven Cassidy is a proud cockney who goes to the “extremely posh” Hampstead School for Girls. I liked Haven, she is a confident and standout main character. Her cockney roots and phrases makes her unique amongst the characters in the book as well as amongst other adventure story main characters. It’s a nice way to introduce readers to the language and the glossary at the start of the book will be useful for readers.

It’s positive to see a character like Haven stand out from her peers but be confident with it, it highlights the importance of being true to yourself without it needing to be said directly. The illustrations throughout are dynamic and help to bring the cast of characters to life. Our Children in the Shadows is an entertaining adventure.

There's lots of twists to keep you hooked and it is a great first book to start a series. A solid recommendation for any middle grade reader who enjoys spy stories, mysteries and fantasy.
