LoveReading4Kids Says
Get out of the Game is a set of phonic reading books, 12 in all that tell the story of Gus, who, for his birthday receives a new game called Room Trap. He soon finds himself lost in his own game. With the help of his two pals, Kip and Tess, he goes on a quest to find the way out. Each story tells another part of the adventure with a different challenge or puzzle to solve. There are adventures with bats, rats and dinosaurs, caves and cliffs. Gus realises by the end of the story, not just the way out, but the value and importance of friendship.
Each book finishes on a cliffhanger, encouraging the reader to pick up the next one in the series.
The books concentrate on adjacent consonants and consonant digraphs and suffixes. There is a different phonic focus in each book. At the start of each book there is a set of reading practice CVCC words and a useful vocabulary list to help with content and understanding. The stories are clearly written in an accessible font with bright detailed and explanatory illustrations.
Although the level of reading is suitable for a year 2 pupil, the story content and its characters are more mature, making it a perfect read for a struggling year 3-4 child who doesn’t want to be embarrassed by reading what they perceive as babyish stories. I trialled it the other day with a Year 4 pupil and I won him round the moment a computer game was featured! Book 2 was requested, a happy result!
