Glowfly Dance Synopsis

When glowflies dance, they leave trails of light, stories that circle then fade, invisible, into night air. From Mexico to Scotland to London to North Africa, the West Indies and back again, Glowfly Dance is a story of travel and survival, one that explores family trauma and the experiences of a little girl who grows up looking 'different'. Mai is half-Filipino and never knew her father. Through Mai's eyes, we see the world as both beautiful and exotic, and observe the harsh realities of her mother's existence. When Rashid enters their lives, home becomes prison and school freedom for Mai and her half-sister Amy. The story takes off into flight and fear, the children and their mother running from place to place, changing names and identity. Abduction, cruelty and abuse are now a part of their daily lives. At one point they seem to have found freedom, but Rashid always wins. The story reaches a shocking, inevitable climax, and Mai's life is changed forever. Told with the humour, pathos and unaffected realism of a child, Glowfly Dance is a powerful and deeply affecting story of family, survival and, ultimately, hope.
