"Go on an adventure in the dramatic world of Celtic tales."
November 2025 Book of the Month
Fairies, shapeshifters, monsters, clever girls, giants and curses; you’ll find them all in the tales Lari Don has chosen for this spellbinding new collection.
Personally, I love stories of kelpies, those dangerous shape-shifting, water-dwelling horses, and there’s a terrific one from the Isle of Man as an opener, in which a particularly threatening kelpie makes an appearance and is outwitted by farmer’s daughter Kirree.
There are retellings of stories you might know, such as The Children of Lir from Ireland, while Cornish tale Duffy and the Dizzy Imp is a ‘guess my name’ folktale, most familiar to us now in Rumpelstiltskin. Whether familiar or not, these stories have survived and been passed down the centuries, told and retold, because they’re so rich and satisfying to share, dramatic, funny, full of reflections on human nature. They may be hundreds of years old, but the things that matter – family, society, the right way to behave – haven’t changed.
Lari Don is a superb storyteller, and these stories are wonderful to read aloud and especially as the nights draw in.
