It’s never too early to help a child build their self-esteem, and I Shine like The Sun is a first book of self-affirmation. Simple sentences – I am precious, I am gentle, I am mighty – present positive affirmations alongside beautiful representations of the natural world: like the Earth, like the moon, like the wind.
Images are built from collage and are very attractive and very tactile. The penultimate page reads, ‘I am happy to be me’, and there’s a mirror for us, in the centre of a gorgeous sunflower. The final pages show child and parent in an embrace: I belong.
Positive, quietly demonstrating our connection to the natural world, and full of opportunities for talk, this is a lovely book to share and a valuable one.
