Nick Sharratt - Illustrator

About the Illustrator

Nick Sharratt was born in London in 1962 and trained in graphic design at St. Martin's School of Art. He takes his inspiration from the pop and graphic art of the 1960s, which he experienced as a child. He loves to use vibrant colours and bold patterns in his pictures, but, he says, "the most important element of my work is always the humour." He likes experimenting with different media and you'll find watercolour, liquid acrylics, charcoal, ink, animation cell paint and photographs in his work.

His work is split between illustrating for other writers, most notably Jacqueline Wilson, and producing his own picture books for a younger audience. Eating is one of Nick's favourite pastimes and food often crops up in his work.

Julia Eccleshare, the editorial expert on Lovereading4kids says,
Nick Sharratt’s big and bold illustrations leap off the page and delight very young readers with their cheerful simplicity. The sounds of lots of different noises are celebrated in Toddle Waddle as a toddler takes a simple stroll to the end of the pier and lots of others follow, greedy animals tuck into delicious plates of food at the lovely meal where manners don’t matter in Chocolate Mousse for Greedy Goose.

Fourteen-year-old Prue and her sister Grace have been educated at home by their controlling, super-strict father all their lives. Forced to wear Mum's odd hand-made garments and forbidden from reading teenage magazines, they know they're very different to 'normal' girls - but when Dad has a stroke and ends up in hospital, unable to move or speak, Prue suddenly discovers what it's like to have a little freedom. Sent to a real school for the first time, Prue struggles to fit in. The only person she can talk to is her kindly, young - and handsome - art teacher, Rax. They quickly bond, and Prue feels more and more drawn to him. As her feelings grow stronger, she begins to realise that he might feel the same way about her. But nothing could ever happen between them - could it?
