July 2022 Book of the Month | Time for another Little Badman adventure. This time, Humza, Umer and Wendy must face The Undead. Welcome to Big School. Humza Khan - aka Little Badman, Eggington's greatest rapper - might have finally met his match. Evil teacher geniuses and giant killer hamsters (see previous Little Badman adventures for details) are nothing compared to starting a new school. He's already been out rap-battled by the school bully, laughed at by his classmates. Oh, and we haven't even mentioned the ancient magical orb causing havoc and very possibly leading to world destruction. At least Humza has found someone to help with his homework. It's just a shame this friend isn't exactly alive.
April 2022 Debut of the Month | You’ve got to love the diary format, especially when the diarist’s family and friends provide such rich material for comedy and drama. Harper Drew opens her diary with one birthday, her own; and closes it with another, that of annoyingly perfect Maise Felix. The celebrations are very different in scale, but they’re both fairly disastrous and the disasters, in both cases, are down to Drew family members. It seems there’s very little the Drew family can do that doesn’t result in some sort of catastrophe, even their holiday involves berserk animals, mouth to mouth resuscitation and Harper’s little brother Prune being shut in a sock drawer. The great thing about diaries is the unique insight they give us into our protagonist’s innermost thoughts, and as the days pass, we know that no matter what is going on, Harper has the strength of personality to take charge and find her own way of coping. Great fun and a treat for fans of the Wimpy Kid or The Accidental Diary of B.U.G..
The inimitable Louis Sachar has done it again in this new Wayside School caper. Sachar totally gets Primary age readers - sees the world through their eyes, speaks to them in a wry voice that rings with understanding and funny details. What’s more, the bitesize chunks of plot (essentially inter-connected vignettes that form a satisfying whole) keep readers hungry for more, while the off-the-wall (yet believable) comic characters are guaranteed to induce gaggles of giggles. As a new year begins, Mrs Jewls’s pupils have a big bunch of stuff on their plates. An Ultimate Test looms ahead of them, while a Cloud of Doom looms overhead, growing bigger and more powerful each day. Back in class, the pupils are tasked with collecting one million nail clippings to get a sense of just how massive one million is, while Mrs Jewls’s paperclip appreciation is taken to crazy heights (“she marvelled at the magnificent metal masterpiece”) when she’s revealed to keep a secret stash of them in a locked room. Then there’s Mrs Surlaw the librarian, who has a GIANT stuffed walrus and arranges books according to their length, and the author’s cameo appearance as Louis the yard teacher (fun fact - the author actually used to be Louis the yard teacher). Perfectly complemented by Aleksei Bitskoff’s wittily detailed illustrations, this is clever, comic joy. You might also love The Worst Class in the World from Joanna Nadin or the Middle School series from James Patterson.
You've heard of Little Badman, right? No? Oh. Well. . . Doesn't matter. You will do one day. He's gonna be big. Little Badman, aka Humza Khan, has saved the world TWICE. So it's lucky when Humza and his friends narrowly avoid being hit by rock from outer-space. What does get hit is a box of delicious samosas, which turn . . . Radioactive! Now the trio have superpowers, which is pretty cool. What's less cool is the giant hamsters on the loose. Looks like a job for Little Badman and his crew.
Shortlisted for the Blue Peter Book Awards 2021, Best Story | This funny, gentle story is packed with snappy humour and hilarious characters. You can’t help but love Riley, a brilliant, witty, world-weary kid and long-suffering underdog. There’s a lovely message about being grateful for all the things that you have and for appreciating the people who support you, no matter what. Perfect for Diary of a Wimpy Kid fans or children about to start secondary school, though there’s a lot of fun to be had for grown ups here too.

Discover some amazing and unusual facts about monkeys in this imaginative book full of humorous scenarios that children can relate to. Using everyday activities as a comparison, children find out more about the lives of monkeys in the wild. Highly illustrated throughout with lively and colourful artwork that will appeal to young audiences.
This bright, attractive book, part of an innovative non-fiction series, imagines elephants in everyday situations to convey information about the animals in a clever and highly memorable way. For example, what would happen if an elephant went to school? Well, the library would be the best place for it as elephants need to raise their trunks and trumpet loudly to communicate. Children will learn a great deal from the book, not least the importance of asking ‘What if …’. ~ Andrea Reece
An attractive picture book which is also a highly informative information book. It includes lots of fun questions about what a penguin might do if it suddenly turned up in the young reader’s world. How would a penguin swim in a swimming pool? Would a penguin be able to play football? What would a penguin eat if it came to dinner? How would a penguin sleep in a house? The answers are full of surprises all of which are entertainingly illustrated.
Could An Octopus Climb A Skyscraper will be sure to keep young readers entertained whilst also helping them to understand and retain animal facts. A fun and engaging introduction into the life of an Octopus. Following on from the popular What if a Dino series, QED is publishing four new titles on ocean animals: Could a Shark do Gymnastics? Could a Whale Swim to the Moon? Could a Penguin Ride a Bike? Could an Octopus Climb a Skyscraper?
This bright, attractive looking book takes a quirky approach to natural history. Colourful artwork and higgledy-piggledy type create outlandish scenarios to explore animal characteristics. Children will love the absurdity of questions such as ‘Could a shark do gymnastics?’ Or ‘What if a shark went to the dentist?’, but the answers are surprisingly informative, and memorable too. It turns out that sharks’ strong, bendy bodies are perfect for gymnastics – they can leap more than 2.5 metres, higher than any human. There’s a more conventional fact file at the end too, complete with smiling cartoon shark, pointer in hand! See the partner volume too Could a Whale Swim to the Moon? ~ Andrea Reece
Part of a fun and informative series (see also Could a Shark Do Gymnastics?) this book imagines a whale in some pretty bizarre situations: trying karaoke for example, and flying through the air strapped underneath an aeroplane! It’s a fun and clever way of demonstrating the whale’s size and other characteristics. As for the question, ‘Could a whale swim to the Moon?’ – the answer is yes: a blue whale will swim about one million kilometres during its lifetime, further than going to the Moon, and back. The pictures are bright and appealing, and the absurdity of the questions is bound to appeal to 6 – 8 year olds. ~ Andrea Reece

'Watch closely,' said Mrs Jewls. 'You can learn much faster using a computer instead of paper and pencil.' Then she pushed the computer out of the window. The children all watched it fall thirty floors. 'See?' said Mrs Jewls. 'That's gravity ...' That's the way things happen at Wayside School. There are twenty-nine kids in Mrs Jewls' class and this book is about all of them: there is Todd, who is in trouble every day, until he gets a magic dog; Paul, whose life is saved by Leslie's pigtails; Ron, who dares to try the cafeteria's mushroom surprise; and all the others who help turn a day at Wayside School into one madcap adventure after another.
When a substitute teacher is called to stand in for Mrs Jewls, it can mean only one thing - strange things are going to happen at Wayside School. Miss Mush has prepared a special lunch of baked liver in purple sauce and it is pet day on the thirtieth floor. There are dogs and cats and frogs and skunks and an orange named Fido, causing a terrible commotion. Not to mention the arrival of the POOPS handbook in the playground ... Enjoy all the fun in this enormously humorous and quirky introduction to Louis Sachar's famously dry wit. From top to bottom, Wayside is packed with quirky and hilarious characters who are all brought to life in this new edition with delightful illustrations by Aleksei Bitskoff. This is an unmissable, irrepressible story of mixed-up mayhem from Louis Sachar, the bestselling author of Holes.
There has been a terrible mistake. Instead of having thirty classrooms side by side, Wayside School is thirty storeys high! (The builder said he was sorry.) Perhaps that's why all sorts of strange and unusual things keep happening - especially in Mrs Jewls's classroom on the very top floor. There's the terrifying Mrs Gorf, who gets an unusually fruity comeuppance; Terrible Todd, who always gets sent home early; and Mauricia, who has a strange ice-cream addiction. Meanwhile, John can only read upside down, and Leslie is determined to sell her own toes. From top to bottom, Wayside is packed with quirky and hilarious characters who are all brought to life in this new edition with delightful illustrations by Aleksei Bitskoff throughout. This is an unmissable, irrepressible story of mixed-up mayhem from Louis Sachar, the bestselling author of Holes.
