How many wonderful things start with time, with looking up and the imagination? That’s how treehouses start, according to this beautiful and inspiring picture book. As each page turns, we explore a different treehouse in the company of groups of little children, excited, happy, working together. And the treehouses, how wonderful are they? The one shaped like a pirate ship, the one with the huge built-in bookcase, the ones high up amidst the stars in the sky, all extraordinary, all for children only, places in which to dream and explore. It’s a book that repays multiple readings with each spread full of detail and joy.
April 2016 Book of the Month The characters may be bears, but the parent/child relationship depicted in this lovely picture book will be familiar to all readers. It’s hot so a little bear suggests to his dad that they should go to the river to cool down and dad agrees. Little Bear is determined to lead the way and show his dad just how brave and clever he is but, as all parents know, this kind of excitement leads to accidents. Sure enough, Little Bear slips but with Dad’s help they reach the river in the end and have a lovely time. The text perfectly catches some of those special interactions between parent and child, and illustrator Emily Hughes makes the bears particularly endearing. ~ Andrea Reece

You cannot tame something so happily wild. In this beautiful picture book by Emily Hughes, we meet a little girl who has known nothing but nature from birth-she was taught to talk by birds, to eat by bears, and to play by foxes. She is unashamedly, irrefutably, irrepressibly wild. That is, until she is snared by some very strange animals that look oddly like her, but they don't talk right, eat right, or play correctly. She's puzzled by their behavior and their insistence on living in these strange concrete structures: there's no green here, no animals, no trees, no rivers. Now she lives in the comfort of civilization. But will civilization get comfortable with her? In her debut picture book, Hughes brings an uncanny humor to her painterly illustrations. Her work is awash with color, atmosphere, and a stunning visual splendor that will enchant children while indulging their wilder tendencies. Wild is a twenty-first-century answer to Maurice Sendak's children's classic-it has the same inventiveness, groundbreaking art, and unmissable quirkiness.
