Fiona Woodcock studied Graphic Communication at Glasgow School of Art and now lives in London. For many years she worked in the world of animated films and commercials alongside her own illustration work and scribbling down ideas for books. She's presently routing through those ideas and enjoying developing them into fully formed books.
Her debut book Hiding Heidi was nominated for the 2017 Kate Greenaway award. Her other author/illustrator books Poppy and the Blooms, Look and Hello are out now. Look was the winner of the AOI World Illustration Awards 2019, in the Children's Books / Professional category.
She also illustrates other peoples stories: A Dot In The Snow by Corrinne Averiss was selected as one of 'The Times Children's Books of the Year 2016' and nominated for the Kate Greenaway Award 2018.
It's a great pleasure for Fiona Woodcock to consolidate ideas and observations in the form of a carefully crafted book. A perfect project would combine her love of character design, pattern and hand-drawn typography. All the projects she works on have a paper based handmade origin. She likes to draw with children's blo pens, rubber stamps, cutting stencils and experimenting with printing techniques. She finds this playful approach and embracing collaboration brings about fresh ways to visualise ideas.

November 2019 Book of the Month | Not since The Snowman have readers been taken on such a magical, snowy journey of love and adventure. Phoebe lives in a gloomy orphanage run by the cruel Griselda Bone. The two clash frequently, and often over Phoebe’s creative response to her school work: Griselda does not approve of words like ‘whispery’ and ‘flumping’. Locked up in the snow overnight, Phoebe and her little dog Herb are surprised by a huge and magical snow dragon, who takes them on an extraordinary ride through the skies. Filled with snowflakes, starlight and revelling in the power of the imagination this is a gorgeous story for Christmas nights and Fiona Woodcock’s illustrations are very special indeed.
Two young creatures meet and play in the snowy wilds of the Arctic in this story of friendship, adventure and love. Miki, a little polar bear, is scampering through the snow while Mum goes fishing, when he sees a red dot in the distance. The dot turns out to be a little girl in a bright red coat. They play together and when his new friend loses her mitten, Miki dives into the water and saves it. He also helps the girl find her mummy, before he dashes back to find his own mother. It’s a simple story, but full of energy and vigour, and with moments of drama and poignancy. Fiona Woodcock’s illustrations create swirling snowstorms and moments of tenderness between parent and child with equal skill.
Fiona Woodcock’s playful and stylish new picture book stars four utterly charming little characters, Poppy, Dandy and Bluebell, and Buttercup. Together they run wild, spreading sunshine wherever they go. When they learn that the last park in the city is going to be closed, they head off to save it. As readers, we chase after them as they dash from one page to the next, spreading a trail of colour behind them that brightens up the grey city streets. The story is full of joy and optimism, as the little flowers fill the park with new blooms, and will leave readers of all ages smiling. ~ Andrea Reece
