In a nutshell: bumper fun with some of the best-loved characters in children’s books There are no less than twelve different Winnie and Wilbur stories to enjoy in this collection, each one just the right length for bedtime or storytime and guaranteed to leave everyone smiling. Winnie squeezes the most fun possible from any activity, whether she’s cheering up a giant, learning to play the bagpipes or tossing pancakes, and Wilbur is the perfect companion – calm (mostly), and always ready to be supportive or to help Winnie out. Winnie’s wonderful use of language is another of the many joys of these stories, and of course, each one of Korky Paul’s illustrations is a miniature story in itself. ~ Andrea Reece
Winnie the witch and her black cat Wilbur are deservedly some of the most popular characters in contemporary children’s books. This bumper volume contains twelve different adventures, involving them in a variety of entertaining and unusual domestic dramas. As always, Winnie is full of ideas, not all of them very practical, and Wilbur is the perfect foil, patient, long-suffering, supportive. Their escapades will keep children turning the pages effortlessly, and Korky Paul’s extraordinarily inventive black and white illustrations crackle with life and comic detail. Recommended holiday reading, or indeed anytime reading. ~ Andrea Reece
This bumper collection of Winnie the Witch stories is a real treat for young readers. There are twelve different adventures to enjoy, each one of them bursting with typically riotous adventures starring Winnie and her long-suffering companion Wilbur. No matter what is happening (and that could include anything from singing in a choir, to a bit of online shopping for Winnie, or participation in a broomstick race) the relationship between these two much-loved characters roots it all in feelings and emotions that children will recognise, not least the unconditional love between parent and child. As ever Korky Paul’s illustrations, black and white here, bristle with energy, invention and detail. ~ Andrea Reece

What better way to spend Halloween than in the company of everyone's favourite witch? This pumpkin-orange gift pack includes two of Winnie's favourite books: Nitty Winnie! and Winnie Goes Batty, perfect for reading on dark, spooky nights. But if you'd rather be out trick-or-treating, there's a free goody bag, just waiting to be filled with sweets.
The best-selling and ever popular witch Winnie and her cat Wilbur star in the four laugh-out-loud stories in this collection. When things go wrong with the washing machine Winnie tries to create a time machine to solve all her problems. As ever with Winnie, nothing goes quite according to plan! Similar disasters befall her when she tries to tame her wand and when she tries to add something special to Halloween! A Piece of Passion from Helen Mortimer, commissioning editor for children’s books at Oxford University Press. A big part of my job is looking after all the Winnie the Witch titles that we publish. What I love about Winnie is that she’s such good company. Her days are never, ever boring so if you want to add some sparkle to yours, you just need to spend some time with Winnie and Wilbur. I’m not going to give too much away about the stories in Spooky Winnie but you may be wondering why Winnie is wrapped up in loo roll and Wilbur is draped in a ghost costume. Well, it all starts when Mrs Parmar delivers a party invitation to Winnie, at the end of October . . . that should give you a clue! As with all the books from the brilliant partnership of Laura Owen and Korky Paul, there are four fabulous stories in Spooky Winnie. When she’s not putting some magic into Halloween, you’ll find Winnie taking Wilbur and her giant next-door neighbour Jerry on a spot of prehistoric time travel, making Wilbur’s fur stand on end with some spine-tingling stories, and trying to tame a new wand that has a mind of its own. The pages are packed with pictures – I think my favourite has to be the one where Korky Paul has drawn Wilbur with ‘eyes as big as mushrooms’ as Winnie tells him a spooky ghost story. And Winnie’s time machine is pretty awesome, too. Every page number even has its own Korky Paul doodle around it – there are all sorts of minibeasts with miniature contraptions to frame each number, and each one is a work of art! So make your Halloween a happy one – with guaranteed giggles from everyone’s favourite witch!
