This month, we’re celebrating the brilliantly imaginative Thiago de Moraes, author, illustrator, myth-maker, comic creator and, by his own account, approximately 90% beard.

Thiago spends most of his time in a tiny shed at the bottom of his garden, where he writes and illustrates books, comics and, occasionally, bits of old cardboard boxes. His stories are packed with wit, wonder and glorious visual detail, spanning everything from laugh-out-loud picture books to richly illustrated non-fiction.

Thiago’s work has won the Sheffield Children’s Book Award, been longlisted for the Klaus Flugge Prize, and has twice been nominated for the Kate Greenaway Medal. His comic Age of Stone is also published in the weekly story comic The Phoenix.

Young readers may know Thiago from his latest release Welcome to the School of Gods, the brilliantly funny Old Gods New Tricks and its sequel Let Sleeping Gods Lie, or from his spectacularly inventive Myth Atlas and Mighty Myths books.

His highly illustrated Myth Atlas, a guide to myths and legends from around the world, has been translated into 18 languages, bringing ancient stories to readers across the globe.

Welcome to the School of Gods is a LoveReading4Kids June 2026 Book of the Month and was described by our expert reviewer Joy Court as "Zany and hilarious series opener finds Olly Morris trying to survive his first term at the School of Gods."

Old Gods New Tricks was selected as one of our LoveReading4Kids Star Books, our favourite books of 2023. Joy said this book was "A mind blowing and hugely entertaining mythological adventure" and its follow-up Let Sleeping Gods Lie was  "A great read aloud to inspire a fascination with world mythology."

Full of gods, monsters, myths, mischief and marvellous drawings, Thiago’s books are perfect for curious readers who like their stories bold, funny and bursting with adventure.

When he’s not creating books, Thiago lives in England with his wife, children and a pet tortoise called Nibbles. He is also, reportedly, dangerously fond of bacon.
