LoveReading View on The Ghosteleers

A madcap middle grade adventure featuring a hapless main character, a clever cat and supernatural shenanigans.

Norman is not your typical middle grade protagonist. He’s a twenty-three -year-old man who lives suburbia with his cat Morph. Oh, and he’s dead. After accidently blowing the roof off his house, Norman and Morph find themselves in the company of Abathar, The Weigher of Souls who more commonly goes by the name of Sir Poop (short for The Purveyor of Opportunistic Power). Sir Poop gustily informs Norman that he’s “been specially chosen to become a Ghosteleer whose “mission is to protect human beings who are destined to become great inventors or make discoveries that will improve the living world”.

Both Norman and Morph undergo schooling in the art of Ghosteleering, which sees Morph excel in the art of telekinesis while Norman’s skills are somewhat less pronounced. Indeed, “Norman’s cat was proving himself more intelligent than him!” It’s not long before their true quest begins and along the way there’s much silliness and humour, such as when Sir Poop likens post-death paradise to Brighton, and through Norman’s general haplessness (despite his age, Norman certainly doesn’t behave like a fully-grown adult!). Short and pacey, this could be a good one to read aloud using amusing in-character voices.

The Ghosteleers Synopsis

When the bungling Norman accidentally blows himself up, along with his pet cat Morph, they awake to find themselves in a new and mysterious world. Greeted by the bubbly Sir Poop, the pair are invited to join an elite, highly-trained team of Ghosteleers.

Their mission is to protect very special humans from harm by using their amazing telekinetic powers.

Unfortunately for Norman, he quickly discovers his smug cat is the one with the ability... and brains. The most important fight in the history of the planet is about to take place, one that could change the future forever.

The duo must act quickly, use their new-found ghostly skills, and save the day! Thankfully, Norman's cat is going to be there.

About Philip Beicken

Philip Beicken was born in Galway, Ireland but moved to England when he was 6 months old. He lives in West Sussex with his wife and two children and spends most of time clearing up the mess made by the growing number of animals his daughter adopts. Included in that list are three kittens named Molly, Marley and Bear, who like nothing more than chasing every leaf, butterfly and frog in the garden. Even at an early age, Philip enjoyed creating fast paced, light-hearted stories filled with heroes, heroines and villains. His love of all sports, especially tennis and badminton, keeps ...
