‘Story of You’ by Gerald Schaefer is a wholesome picture book that has been written to send a message to young children about positivity and self-esteem. The variety of the illustrations are interesting, with plenty to look at in the pictures as you follow along with the story. The origins of the art from a Californian elementary school who were themselves inspired by the story is a charming detail that adds to the package.
The focus of who you are on the inside, and becoming comfortable in your own skin is a message that is becoming more and more vital to instil in children as early as possible. Focusing on the bright side of life, ‘Story of You’ tells young readers that not only do they live in a marvellous world with brilliant things like dogs and cats, but they’re also wonderful and beautiful in their own right, with a “sky self” invisible but always there to look out for them. A gentle book with an endearing positive mental health message.
