‘Cruising through The Teens Easier Than It Seems’ by Jerry Schaefer encourages mindfulness in teenage readers. Setting up scenarios and topics in a way that allows the reader to feel involved in a conversation, inspiring them to explore ideas and find out the answer for themselves seems to be a very engaging way of writing a self help book. The chapters of this book focus on everything from friendships, feeling left out, physical appearance, bullying, social media, herd mentality / peer pressure and more. Taking you through every aspect of highschool life you can think of, the main focus of the book is to not let your thoughts run away with you, don’t let expectations and storylines from external sources detract from who you truly are inside. I liked the positivity of this book, throughout it encourages readers to be authentically themselves, to take care of yourself yes, but also to enjoy the things your interested in, learn more about yourself, the world around you and topics that inspire you, and don’t be afraid to break from the crowd while being true to yourself. With importance placed on breaking toxic or damaging thought cycles and being mindful and focused on the present, this is an encouraging book for teenagers wanting to follow their own path.
