An old Bakelite telephone belonging to her great-grandfather magically gives Ellie and her friend Blake the ability to talk to animals. This sets up lots of opportunities for adventures, animal rescues and more.
In this story, the children have to intervene in an argument between red and grey squirrels and find a way for the two groups to live safely side by side. Meanwhile, they’re discovering more about Ellie’s great-grandfather, who it turns out also used the magic telephone, and trying to manage rumbunctious runaway cockatoo Shazza. The challenges Ellie and Blake face test their problem-solving skills too and allow readers to explore issues of justice and fairness.
