April 2024 Book of the Month

Moving up to secondary school brings with it a lot of different emotions and worries, thankfully experienced teacher and poet, Christian Foley, has created a perfect guide to help make the transition as smooth as possible.

Foley’s knowledge and empathy for young people is apparent from the opening, bringing an authenticity and understanding that will connect with his audience. He entertainingly addresses the questions, curiosities, and concerns Year 6 students might have in an open and honest manner. Starting with how to navigate the last weeks of primary school, to school uniforms and other practicalities, such as getting lost around a new school and joining clubs. He even provides a handy shopping list of school supplies! I particularly enjoyed the run through of each school subject, those studied before and those yet to be discovered.

As well as the practicalities of the move to secondary school, there is a sensitively written chapter on well-being. Here Foley never plays down or dodges difficult topics, instead he addresses subjects such as bullying, making friends and peer pressure honestly, giving sensible and realistic advice.

As well as being hugely informative and comforting, this is a fun and accessible read. Intersectional illustrations, plenty of humour, occasional poems and engaging activities all combine to create a book that young people will enjoy, as well as benefit from. Foley’s friendly style of writing certainly contributes to this enjoyment, reading it is like talking to a fun, caring, knowledgeable older sibling who has ‘been there, done that’. He never underestimates the inevitable nerves and scariness of starting secondary school, but instead acknowledges and deals with them, whilst encouraging excitement and individuality.

If you have a Year 6 student in your life, put this book in their hands now!
