Like his previous novel, Darkhearts, James L Sutter’s The Ghost of Us boasts brilliant dialogue, and presents an authentic, alternate take on YA romance. In this case, The Ghost of Us is a comic, quirky, coming-of-age story that tackles grief, friendship and romance in an utterly unique, page-turning style.

Cara’s voice had me in its hold from the off: “While only sociopaths are completely proud of themselves, at eighteen, I’d spent plenty of years learning the hard way not to give a shit what anyone else thought of me”. She’s a ghost hunter, set on proving supernatural beings are real, and we first meet her at old Stossel Paper Mill, where Aiden, a local high school senior, lost his life.

With the site due to be pulled down, Cara is up against the clock: “we’re investigating while we still can! Now let’s go find some ghosts!” she addresses her camera.

As things turn out, Cara does find Aiden’s ghost, and she strikes a deal with him – he’ll help her prove the existence of ghosts if she’ll date his grieving sister. Cue the comic tussle of “will-they-won’t they?” tension, and a gripping sense of time running out as Aiden begins to fade, and Cara might have to risk everything by revealing the deal.

Sassy and swoony, The Ghost of Us is a thoroughly refreshing YA romance.
