With three skill badges under her belt, she feels ready to take the Sapling test to progress to the next level, and so she’s tasked with training a new witch. While the fact he’s a boy is met with hostility from some quarters, Robin is descended from an esteemed medieval Welsh sorceress.

Into this, Cassie’s cousin invites her to stay for the summer holidays — he lives in a Cornish seaside Faerie border town, where the Seawitch works as border warden. On arrival, Cassie and co come across copious quantities of faery dust in a secret sea cave, and discover that the Seawitch’s grief-stricken withdrawal from her duties has led to a perilous situation.

As a result, they need to find a magical cup that might heal her. Trouble is, the Erl King wants the same thing, and his reach is on the rise.

With intriguing new characters further enhancing a richly-imagined story world, this ship- shape story escalates Cassie’s overarching quest to find her mother in swashbuckling style.
