Former Children’s Laureate Joseph Coelho’s new series is sure to work its magic on young readers!
Relic Hamilton lives with his grandad above their antique shop in London’s Soho. His world is transformed totally when he finds a set of brass lamps under the floorboards in their cellar. It won’t come as a surprise that they contain genies, but, along with Relic, we quickly discover that there’s a lot to learn about these genies.
Before you can say, ‘three wishes?’, Relic has joined the team at the Hermitic Sodality of Genie Hunters, an organisation that mixes magic, hi-tech and some fabulous gadgets to track down errant genies and protect humanity.
As ‘Wielder of the Lamps’, Relic has real gifts, but it takes an encounter with a pirate captain, sailing the seas hundreds of years ago, to help him unlock the courage he needs to use his powers. The story is immensely satisfying and there’s a great cast of characters – everyone will love Rania, almost 14, youngest doctor ever, half human, half genie.
Coelho is a poet as well as author and each chapter opens with a poem, which is an extra treat, while Hyun Song We’s illustrations of the genies and the action are terrific. Genie-us all round!
