In line with the previous books in Liz Flanagan’s Wildsmith series, Magical Mountain Rescue — the satisfying series finale — melds fairy tale magic with of-the-moment themes around conservation and ecology. Add to that lashings of compassion, magical creatures, peril and friendship, and it amounts to a fine work of fiction for young nature-lovers who still relish tales of magical realms, while also wanting some real-world relatability.
In the case of Magical Mountain Rescue, when a young prince is kidnapped, Rowan must step up to bring about his rescue, and more. Being wildsmiths, with the power to communicate with animals, she and her Grandpa “could track the kidnappers and find the missing prince” better than anyone, but first she must convince the Queen: “Rowan gathered all her courage, words buzzing around her mind like a swarm of bees. She hoped she would say the right thing now. Many lives might depend on it, including her own”.
With manageable short chapters, charming illustrations by Joe Todd-Stanton, and writing that laces lyrical description with page-turning pace, Magical Mountain Rescue and the wider Wildsmith series is a delight for newly independent readers who are wild about the wonders of the natural world, and adore tales of friendship.
