September 2024 Book of the Month

Perfectly-pitched for pre-teen readers who are fed up of being considered too young to have their voices heard and taken seriously, Nora Dâsnes’ Save Our Forest! is a glorious graphic novel that sees a band of infectiously passionate friends bring about positive change.

On discovering her beloved forest is about to be trashed to make way for a car park, Bao enlists the support of her friends, and writes a report detailing why taking action on climate change is urgently overdue, pointing out to her adult readers, “It’s really embarrassing to be writing this to you, because this is old news. The first climate convention was in 1992”. But Bao doesn’t just need to convince adults — some of the boys at school don’t get the urgency, to begin with, at least.

When a meeting with the mayor sees her met with a patronising, “It’s great you’re so engaged” response, Bao refuses to be palmed off, and demands to know exactly how to complain, while also implementing a brave, bold plan to stop the demolition.

Impeccably drawn, with swirls of colour and swathes of darkness evoking emotional weight, the text – which includes sparky dialogue and text messages – is spot-on, brilliantly translated by Lise Lœrdal Bryn to create a book that will chime with young readers who are passionate about environmental issues, and utterly tired of waiting for adults to take the wheel.
