Classic stories are generally classics for a reason, and that is certainly true of Malorie Blackman’s Pigheart Boy. As relevant and readable now as it was when it was first published over 20 years ago, this is a sensitive, informative and considered story about organ donation and what it feels like to be at the centre of a media storm.
Cameron is a typical thirteen-year-old who loves his family, hanging out with his friends and swimming. But Cameron is also very different to his peers, his heart doesn’t work properly, and his future looks increasingly bleak. When a specialist doctor offers hope in the form of a startingly new procedure Cameron decides that the risk is worth the chance of a future, but not everybody agrees with his decision.
Beautifully told with Blackman’s incredible talent for creating real, believable characters who challenge the reader to question and consider their own beliefs, Pigheart Boy is well-deserving of its decades of praise. As well as an award-winning BBC TV series, the novel has enjoyed many different editions and covers, and now it joins other great children’s books as a Puffin Clothbound Classic. These beautiful, hardback editions are collectors’ favourites featuring real clothing bindings, two-coloured foil covers and sprayed edges. Further enhanced by a funny and heartfelt foreword from the nation’s favourite doctor-turned author, Adam Kay, this is a must have for fans and those for whom reading is a sensory experience.

Pig Heart Boy (Puffin 85th Anniversary Clothbound Edition) Synopsis
Celebrating 85 years of Sparking Imaginations
A beautiful clothbound edition of the much-loved modern classic Pig-Heart Boy. Bound in real cloth with two coloured foils and sprayed coloured edges, this deluxe edition is a perfect gift or collector's item. Part of an eight book set published to mark the 85th anniversary of Puffin Books, this edition has a brand-new foreword from Adam Kay.
All Cameron wants is a 'normal' life - friends, swimming, school, family.
But most normal thirteen-year-olds don't desperately need a new heart because theirs doesn't work properly.
One doctor offers hope. Cameron could - if he and his parents agree - take part in a radical and controversial procedure involving the transplant of a pig's heart into his human body. It's risky. And it's never been done before . . .
While Cameron comes to terms with the idea, he finds the world around him is much, much less accepting. But surely everyone will understand that it's better to have a pig's heart that works than a human heart that doesn't - won't they . . .?
