July 2025 Book of the Month

This is the ninth in the highly successful Big Bright Feelings series, which has become such a mainstay of PSHE collections in schools and highly rated by parents for helping young children come to terms with their feelings and indeed for helping parents to understand their children.

The illustrations are as subtle and beautifully expressive as ever and the nuanced text does a really good job of capturing what it is like to feel shy with all those telling details of feeling self-conscious, with hot cheeks, and definitely not feeling confident about speaking up.

At the start we see a relaxed and happy Sammy having lots of fun at home. But, when he’s surrounded by lots of people, his cheeks glow a brilliant bright pink and he doesn’t feel like he can talk. What makes it worse is everyone saying ‘he’s so shy!’ So much worse, that he turns completely pink, from head to toe.

But one day Sammy meets Lily who does not see his shyness and, little by little, the fun they have together makes the pinkness fade, until he decides he will never let his shyness stop him from having fun.

To be reassuring and comforting, while acknowledging that the feelings will never go completely away, is a fine line to tread but handled here magnificently. Another must have!
