LoveReading4Kids Says
What an absolutely splendid book this is! Not only a thing of beauty, with its bejewelled and embossed front cover, but it delightfully combines the appeal of hands-on science experiments, impressive magic tricks and the eternal Harry Potterish fantasy appeal of a school for wizards. It is a book that any child, and any chemistry teacher who wants to make science exciting, would treasure and return to again and again.
The Touchwood Academy of Magical Thinking welcomes readers to a series of 40 magical experiments with tips on how to perform them and always with an explanation of how they work. Grouped in themes the experiments reveal what the world is made of and how matter combines and mixes and the reactions and transformations that can follow. The beautifully illustrated pages show a diverse pair of young wizards (and Merlin the cat) practising the fascinating experiments. Using equipment and resources which can readily be found at home, clear instructions are given for how to prepare and undertake each experiment safely, with a warning sign clearly indicating where help from an adult is required.
Every spread has sturdy flaps to lift and fold out mini books, which give the scientific background and explain very clearly how and why the experiment works. This genuinely is a magical introduction to the principles and essential vocabulary of chemistry and it is a hugely enjoyable learning experience. I personally cannot wait to make endothermic ice cream!
