Of course, she is helped in this endeavour by the beautifully detailed and evocative illustrations from the talented Elin Manon. Together they have created a book which will be a treasured addition to any home or school collection. It could not be more timely or important, when the state of our national rivers is an absolute disgrace.
Reading this aloud or independently cannot help but impress upon you the importance of water. The availability of water resources will be one of the most serious challenges that the human race is going to face and this book makes clear the connections between water and all the life that it supports and between water and its transformational effect on the planet.
Water literally runs through us in the same way the river runs through the landscape, in an endless cycle of renewal and change. She also draws on the way rivers are a liminal space where stories and myths develop and highlights their strategic importance to the development of settlements and how often they form borders between countries and peoples.
This book would complement topic work on rivers for a wide age group and is an excellent example of an informational picturebook. A truly potent learning resource and a beautiful and enjoyable book.
