Lucy and friends are back with another eco-adventure, discovering caves and working to protect marine life. This is the third adventure on Pontus with Lucy and her friends, Jack and Solomon. The Hidden Cave is set one year after Lucy and her mum moved to Pontus from London in the first book in the series, The Eye of the Turtle.

Since then Lucy has become passionate about the ocean and marine life, and stands up to champion the preservation of their local landscape. In this book, Lucy and her friends notice what looks to be an underwater cave, braving the danger to explore it. Lucy also witnesses some mistreatment of their local area by fisherman, leading to the group looking into the impact of the fishing industry.

The Hidden Cave is an interesting story as it focuses more on the history of the island, stories of pirates and smuggling are interwoven into the story as Lucy and her friends investigate the tunnels they’ve found. It was good to see that diving safety was still a key part of the narrative, even if this time it took the form of Lucy, Jack and Solomon getting into trouble for not being completely safe.

The discovery of the strange parcels and the smugglers add some additional action to the plot, while Lucy’s work to establish a patrol boat maintains the strong eco-theme of the series. Once again, marine life is described in detail, with extra information and pictures at the back of the book making this an engaging read for fellow young ocean enthusiasts.

I think that Lucy is a great role model, thinking beyond herself to try to keep everyone safe on her dives and their adventures, and fighting for change that protects the ocean life she’s come to love.
