In 1941, as war reaches Hong Kong, an unlikely soldier steps forward – on four legs.

Gander is a Newfoundland puppy, carried halfway across the world by a band of Canadian soldiers to a city on the brink of battle. He doesn’t understand war or why men fight. He only knows who he belongs to.

As the Battle of Hong Kong erupts in smoke and fire, Gander refuses to leave his men. Through shattered streets and collapsing defences, he stays close – watching, waiting, protecting. And when a single moment demands everything, instinct and devotion drive him toward an act of courage that no one will forget.

Because Gander was real. He served alongside soldiers in the defence of Hong Kong in 1941, and his bravery would earn him the Dickin Medal – the animals’ Victoria Cross.
