"OK, pipsqueaks, time to get rebelliously silly!"
Sam Usher’s quirky, energetic watercolour and ink illustrations and his well observed representations of young children are perfectly suited to this wonderful celebration of silliness.
It opens with a proclamation from the Committee for Sensibleness issuing a line of ‘pipsqueaks’ – young and old – with strict rules: no diving into the paddling pool full of alligators, no picking your nose, no using rude words like ‘gurning flabtruck’ or ‘plop,’ and definitely on no account are you ever, ever to press that red button. Could you resist pressing the button? When one of the children does – ‘Kaboom!’ – a gatefold reveals exactly what the consequences are.
Silly is nowhere near enough of a description for this story, which is delightfully anarchic, weaves numerous different adventures into the pictures (go back and find them at the end) and is an example of perfect picture book comic timing. Lots to enjoy and pipsqueaks should also look out Naughty by Jeanne Willis and Paddy Donnelly or the classic The Elephant and the Bad Baby by Elfrida Vipont and Raymond Briggs.
