"Questionable self-help advice from apex predator – and self-proclaimed life coach – Tony Rex, in this delightfully silly satirical picturebook. "
Tony Rex is not only a prehistoric apex predator, he’s a life coach, and these two identities intersect in somewhat suspicious ways as he encourages his readers to become their best, most delicious selves. Each of Tony’s seven steps (or ‘stomps’) sounds like decent, dependable self-help advice at first glance, such as Step 2: Don’t Hide Away: “You’re beautiful – on the outside and the inside.
Let the world SEE you!”, until each is undercut by Tony’s barely-hidden true motivation: “Stay out in the open where I can spot you”. The language of reassuring, benevolent self-improvement is used to seriously funny effect.
The patterned format of list and punchline, as well as being a great vessel for comedy, makes for a rewarding reading experience, allowing children to make predictions, while Rex’s tongue-in-cheek first-person narration further adds to the humour. Young readers may even be inspired to write in the voices of their own favourite deadly creatures – what advice might a great white shark give, or a mosquito?
Latimer’s text is accompanied by cartoonish illustrations of unfortunate, wide-eyed children doing their best to follow Rex’s advice while also avoiding getting eaten, and the book closes with a final illustrated double-page jumpscare. An imaginative and entertaining spoof, perfect for reading aloud.
