Benjamin Zephaniah’s poetry has been exciting and inspiring children and young people for many years and it’s great to see this new anthology which collects so many of his poems together after his untimely death in 2023.

Gathered in this illustrated book are the poems that first appeared in his collections Talking Turkeys, Funky Chickens and Wicked World. Undoubtedly most young people will turn immediately to the poem Talking Turkeys, a huge favourite in schools. Typically, it is both funny and serious and makes some thought-provoking points about the way we celebrate Christmas, but it also shows off Zephaniah’s ear for rhythm, and it is a treat to read or perform aloud.

So many of these poems are the same, great to read aloud, full of an urgency and emotion that communicates itself to readers and listeners, and sometimes very funny too.

Another favourite included here and now more topical than ever, is We Refugees, which reminds us what makes people seek refuge and that, ‘We can all be refugees.’ Let Dem Know is a poetry collection to open our eyes up to the world and if readers are hooked look out too for collections by Lemn Sissay, Grace Nichols or Kayo Chingonyi.
