"This energetic comic caper sees a school inspection and an escaped arachnid put a post-exam circus trip at risk."
Mina Mahmood is back for more mayhem and misadventure in School Inspectors, the second book in a funny series that showcases the imaginative exuberance of primary-age children through its endearingly irrepressible protagonist and her pals.
Mina and her classmates are beyond excited when Miss Khan reveals that their “post-exam party bonanza” is set to include a class trip to Fisbo’s Circus. But all that changes when headmaster Mr Aku is informed that the inspectors are coming! After commanding everyone to be “STRICT, PROFESSIONAL, OUTSTANDING [and] EXEMPLARY”, he announces that the party is officially cancelled. On top of that, Mina and her best mates Mobeen and Reema are given the unenviable responsibility of showing the inspectors around, and all this while a tarantula is on the loose!
Softening the blow, Miss Kahn suggests they might still go to the circus if the inspectors are impressed by their “EXCEPTIONAL behaviour”. While this gives the gang a great incentive, Mina also feels the weight of responsibility: “It suddenly dawned on me that EVERYBODY was depending on us to get the job done”.
Fizzing with funny drama, and driven by Mina’s joyously animated voice, author Farhana Islam has a wonderful knack for evoking school life through children’s eyes while gently showing how worries can be worked through. Enhanced by Simran Diamond Singh’s dynamic illustrations, and recommended for newly-independent readers, the Mina Mahmood series is also well-suited to read aloud, thanks to the lively dialogue and a diverse cast of well-developed characters.
