Something is up – or rather under – in Bearburgh: the Metro Mice, who live in the tunnels under the city, are angrily demanding that the mayor carry out necessary repairs to protect their home. When he refuses, young mouse Mo turns to young detectives Reggie and Pipsquark the parakeet for help in tracking down the source of the strange noises and rumblings, despite his community’s distrust of ‘Aboves.’

Can our heroes win over the Metro Mice? Could it all somehow be linked to the burglary of a jewellers, and could aspiring criminal mastermind Nora Masque and her gang be involved, even from their new home, a school for wayward racoons?

Told in a mix of text and cartoon strip – illustrator Becka Moor here creating some great cross-section scenes – these action-packed little adventures are great first crime capers, the world of Bearburgh feeling properly real and contemporary too, for all that the characters are animals. It’s great for new and developing readers with lots of fun to be had.
