"Can Kel save her beloved Phoenix, her family farm, her best friend and the boy she loves to hate."
What a debut! 400 pages packed with everything a fantasy fan will love. Really well thought through world building with a new mythical creature to love - there are no dragons here!
There is a fascinating, well-developed cast of characters with developing romantic connections, including the classic rivals to lovers trope. There is loyalty, betrayal, adventure, danger, death and mystery. It may sound as if too much is going on, but the author keeps as tight a hold on her story, as does Kelyn Varra on her beloved phoenix Savita. Kel is trying to keep her family’s farm and phoenix aviary afloat. As a phoenix tamer, she looks after and trains the phoenixes for their racing team, the Crimson Howlers, but the tragic death of their rider forces them into teaming up with her most arrogant rival, Coup and his business manager brother Bekn.
Infuriatingly, Coup is able to bond with Savita and rides her to an astonishing victory, which gains the attention of a billionaire tech boss who wants to buy the team. But Kel soon comes to suspect that he may have darker motives and that Savita and all phoenixes are in danger from Christo. It is an absolutely fascinating world that has been created, with all the elements of Phoenix lore and the presence of a deadly disease that might be cured by phoenix regeneration.
The dramatic tension of the terrifying races and the unfolding mystery, together with the romantic tension developing between Kel and Coup will keep the reader entirely gripped and desperate to find out what happens next!
