Our peregrinations happened to bring us within the vicinity of the native theatre and the clash of tom-toms. Then our consular friend suddenly started, like one remembering an im portant thing, and suggested a visit to the native abode of Thespis. Without more ado we agreed, and as we walked along he informed us that the performers were really the slaves of a wealthy nobleman, who allowed them to appear in this public capacity two or three times every year.
