"A funny middle grade fantasy adventure."
Conductoid by M.B. Lehane is a middle grade fantasy that follows Jack as he navigates his school and home life. A non-identical twin, Jack is a dreamer, who struggles to pay attention in class and is always getting into trouble because of the impact this has on his grades, unlike his bookish sister Phoebe.
Jack’s dreams become more and more vivid, opening up a new world, one where he is called to help in heroic situations. When the exact situations are featured in the news the next day, Jack realises it might not all be a dream, that he might really be a Conductoid, being able to channel the power of those from other dimensions.
Although this is a fantasy story, I like how grounded in reality it is. Football tournaments, quirky teachers and the school bully taking up as much space as meeting Azan and discovering the world of the Conductoid. Because of the balance I think that this might appeal to readers who are maybe trying fantasy for the first time, and want something that introduces a magical new world more gradually.
The dynamic between Jack and Phoebe is interesting, their clash of characters adds another layer of conflict to the story and it will be interesting to see how their dynamics change as the books progress.
With witty one-liners and quips to laugh at, a colourful array of teachers to brighten up the background of the story and an entertaining plot, Conductoid is a well-constructed fantasy book for middle grade readers.
