"A bright, lively and child-friendly retelling of a much-loved classic"
The Wind in the Willows holds a special place in the hearts of so many of us, and this lovely new edition, abridged with much care and sensitivity and with delightful child-friendly illustrations, will win it a new and younger set of readers to love it.
Kenneth Grahame’s original story is about 60,000 words long whereas this version is 10,000 and fully illustrated 96 pages. Nonetheless, all the elements that make it such an appealing story for the young, and so memorable, are there: Ratty and Mole messing about in a boat; Toad delighting in his motor car; his daring escape from the police; Badger’s wonderfully cosy underground home; and of course, the battle to retake Toad Hall. Kenneth Grahame’s distinctive voice is clear throughout, and Kate Hindley’s bold, bright illustrations are a joy, full of the colours of the fields and riverbank, the characters as vivid and alive as they’ve ever been. It’s a lovely book to share with the young and a perfect introduction to one of the best-loved stories.
