Shylo is the smallest rabbit in his family, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t strong, courageous and clever too. Indeed, he’s a key member of the Royal Rabbits whose duty it is to protect Queen and country from their warren under Buckingham Palace. When Shylo returns home for a visit, he finds that the peace of the countryside has been disrupted. A no-good rabbit called Harlequin has set up a commune and persuaded the other rabbits that together they’ll find the legendary Golden Carrot, though it will bring great risk to them and national security. He’s reckoned without little Shylo and his fellow rabbits-in-arms though … A perfect mix of excitement and charm, this story also neatly delivers messages about the importance of self-belief, generosity and true courage. There’s a wonderful cast of characters, it reads aloud beautifully and Kate Hindley’s delightful illustrations are full of life and energy.
August 2019 Debut of the Month | There’s a real feel of Richard Scarry’s Busy Town to this sturdy board book, though it’s totally contemporary, and packs in a satisfying little story too. It’s a bright, sunny morning on Treacle Street and Marcel is busy delivering the post. His bright, red trolley is full of parcels – lift a flap and peep inside to see them – and over the next pages we find out who they’re for. There are leg warmers for the dance school, eggs and flour for the pie shop, and new wheels for the garage. On each page there’s a friendly new character to meet, a flap to lift, and lots and lots of things to spot and count, all illustrated in Kate Hindley’s bright, vibrant illustrations. A lovely book for pre-schoolers.
Tales of the rabbit secret service that loyally serves her majesty from burrows beneath Buckingham Palace, this charming series is going from strength to strength. Someone has stolen the queen’s favourite jewel – a priceless diamond that also seems able to comfort those who possess it. The Royal Rabbits are determined to retrieve it, none more so than young Shylo, who was asleep on the job when the theft occurred. A rich, beautiful and vain tigress could be the culprit, but the diamond is Russian and a team of cunning Kremlin minks are out to steal it back, and you can bet those rotten Ratzis are involved too. Humour (including the occasional bit of social satire) and proper adventure are perfectly balanced and Shylo gets more interesting a character as the stories progress. Delightful, and Kate Hindley’s illustrations make it even more special.
The Champions are poor but happy. Each of them - Mum, Alex and Grandpa Gus - has their own job and works hard. Mum is a sandwich maker, Gus mends cars, Max mows lawns and sometimes washes cars too, which is how he discovers that Grandpa Gus used to design and make them. The story of how Grandpa was cheated out of his business by the unscrupulous Grabber family, and how Max manages to make things right again, is told in this charming new story from Alexander McCall Smith. Funny, exciting and with a proper sense of decency and fair play this will definitely appeal to readers. Kate Hindley’s illustrations lively illustrations are an extra treat.

In a nutshell: brave, loyal, upstanding rabbit hero versus despicable rats Fans of rabbit hero Shylo Tawny-Tail will be delighted to hear that he is back for another exciting adventure. Shylo and the other Royal Rabbits of London are pledged to protect the queen and operate from secret headquarters under Buckingham Palace itself. Their arch enemies are the rat Ratzis, unscrupulous vermin not above using the internet to spread their web of evil. The forthcoming visit of POTUS provides the Ratzis with the opportunity to cause chaos, can Shylo stop them? This second adventure is faster-paced and more action-packed than the first, full of exciting moments though there’s plenty of room for humour and lovely character descriptions too. It’s great fun and there’s a proper emphasis on doing the right thing and discovering your own reserves of courage too. ~ Andrea Reece
March 2018 Book of the Month | A Julia Eccleshare Pick of the Month March 2018 A story of friendship and empathy, of escape and return, or teamwork and reconciliation, this picture book is thoughtful and moving, and features some hugely appealing characters. Oliver and Ruby and little dog Patch love going to the zoo, and make special friends with a baby rescue penguin, Peep. They can tell he misses his old home and friends, and when he goes missing they immediately set out to find him. It’s not easy, and they have to learn to work together before the little runaway is returned to a warm welcome from the other penguins. Claire Freedman’s story provides lots to think about and Kate Hindley’s illustrations are full of warmth and energy, each page a treat (don’t miss the giant tortoise!). ~ Andrea Reece A wonderfully warm story about friendship as favourite characters Oliver and Patch together with their friend Ruby pay a visit to the Zoo. They love meeting all the animals! There are meerkats and tigers and they especially love the penguins. But when a little penguin goes missing the three friends soon find that there is more to visiting to zoo than just looking at the animals. A touching story with a satisfying resolution. ~ Julia Eccleshare Julia Eccleshare's Picks of the Month for March 2018 The Lotterys Plus One by Emma Donoghue King Coo by Adam Stower Splish, Splash, Ducky! by Lucy Cousins We Are Not Frogs! In a nutshell: rabbits save the queen | You may not know this, but whenever a rabbit hears the words ‘the Queen’, they sit up and use their ears to bow, even if they are in bed or on the run, at least according to this charming new book by best-selling authors Santa and Simon Sebag Montefiore. It’s testament to their gifts as storytellers that within a few paragraphs readers will believe this completely, and be immersed in a world in which rabbits wear clothes, read stories of heroes and boldly take on rats that dare threaten her majesty. There are shades of Watership Down in the story of Shylo, the runt who embarks on a daring adventure, but it brings to mind Wind in the Willows too, in the depictions of the English countryside and the creation of eccentric yet believable animal characters. ~ Andrea Reece One of our Books of the Year 2016
A Julia Eccleshare Pick of the Month March 2017 Freddie Mole is just an ordinary boy who never imagines that he will do anything brave. He certainly never dreams that he would be brave enough to become a lion tamer. But then, he didn’t know just what Ripper, Growler, Roarer and Prowler, the four lions in the circus would be like or how many tricks there are in any big-top performance. Freddie’s circus-life journey from floor-sweeping assistant to circus owner through roles as a trapeze artist and lion tamer are all quietly achieved largely by little more than being a thoroughly decent boy. With no magic and not much mystery to propel it, Freddie Mole’s whole-lifetime-adventure is nonetheless a charming and witty story about achieving what you wish for. ~ Julia Eccleshare Julia Eccleshare's Picks of the Month for March 2017 Jellicle Cats by T.S. Children will totally identify with Choochie Pooh. Little he might be, but he’s still irritated and frustrated when his owner won’t treat him like an ordinary dog. It’s a series of daily humiliations: he’s called silly names, fed embarrassing mini-treats and kissed in public! When he goes to the park, a mini-puppy-treat-eating-Choochie-Pooh in a handbag, he’s sure the other dogs won’t play with him, but he’s wrong! This funny picture book with its little dogs’ eye-view of the world will be much enjoyed by anyone used to being the smallest in the room, and might give bigger people something to think about too. Kate Hindley brings Choochie Pooh and friends to gloriously boisterous life in her vivid, detailed illustrations. ~ Andrea Reece
In a nutshell: a clever bit of detection in the classroom | This satisfying, entertaining classroom crime caper thoroughly respects its young readers’ intelligence. Smashie and Dontel are smart as they come and when the school hamster disappears from his cage they decide to unravel the mystery. Little do they know that in fact their classroom has been the scene of not one but three crimes; it will take all their ingenuity and teamwork to find the culprits. Their approach to crime solving is as rigorous as any grown up detective and during the course of the book readers will learn terms such as ‘exonerate’, ‘caveat’ and ‘circumstantial evidence’. With a cast of delightfully eccentric teachers and quirky students, there’s as much to make readers to laugh as there is to stimulate their grey matter and this is highly recommended. If this whets readers’ appetites for idiosyncratic young detectives, Alexander McCall Smith’s Precious Ramotswe series will be right up their street. ~ Andrea Reece

Longlisted for the UKLA 2018 Book Award A party invitation is at the centre of this highly entertaining and amusing story. It states that guests must bring a hat, but it appears that there are more entry requirements too, and as the story goes on they become increasingly absurd. Kate Hindley is given some truly wonderful scenes to illustrate and rises to the challenge superbly. Characters featured include a monocle-sporting badger and elephant forced into a tutu. There’s lots to look at on every spread and the surprise ending will send everyone back to the beginning to check for details that might have been missed. Great fun! ~ Andrea Reece

There are two stories in this attractive little book, both involving food, animals and independent adventuring, a great combination for children! The Popcorn Pirates takes place in the Caribbean where a group of children single-handedly take on the pirates who have stolen their islands’ popcorn harvest. Their method of overpowering the pirate is particularly ingenious! In The Bubblegum Tree another set of children head for the forests of India to help their favourite local factory owner save the special bubblegum trees from loggers. Alexander McCall Smith is an expert storyteller and these are really satisfying and enjoyable stories. Kate Hindley’s pictures catch the tone perfectly. ~ Andrea Reece

July 2014 Debut of the Month Introducing a fantastically funny new voice in children's fiction. Think David Walliams meets Franck Cottrell Boyce with a smidgen of classics like Dick King-Smith and Richmal Crompton thrown in. Jumblecat is bursting with quirky characters (including a jumbled up talking cat - I ask you!, a taxidermist and an eccentric old lady), juicy and playful writing. It is a book to be relished, read and re-read over again. Beautifully illustrated with lots of black and white line art by the Greenaway Medal nominated artist Kate Hindley, Jumblecat is sure to capture a child's heart as has happened with the kids from the Lovereading4kids reader review panel who were lucky enough to read and review it ahead of publication. A Piece of Passion from Emma Matthewson, Editor-at-Large It was quite a dreary day outside when I started reading Jumblecat by Archie Kimpton, and it cheered me up so much! The story of Billy, who discovers a cat who not only can talk but is literally jumbled up (head, tail, ears, paws, all in the wrong place) is such fun. For fans of Roald Dahl and David Walliams, this story is perfect for boys and girls - something that really drew me to it, when so many stories are clearly aimed at one or the other. I just loved it as I laughed (at Billy's obsessively neat freak mother hairdrying the carrots before she puts them in the fridge) and cried (at Billy's really very touching relationship with his gentle father). I really hope everybody else who reads it will love it just as much as I do.
A fabulous new picture book from the bestselling author of Aliens Love Underpants. A read-along rhyming text that will capture children's imaginations.
Twas the night before Christmas, with a wonderful twist! Lewis Carroll's classic Wonderland returns but this time instead of Alice, it's Santa's turn for an adventure down the rabbit hole. Join the Cheshire-Cat, the Mad Hatter, and the reindeer for a tea party with lots of festive fun! The Queen of Hearts hates Christmas - she's banned tinsel, mince pies and even good cheer -because when she was a little Princess the White Rabbit was late delivering her letter to Father Christmas and she didn't receive a present. But one snowy Christmas Eve, Santa finally receives her letter and races to deliver her gift! Will Santa and his reindeer be able to put the Merry back into Christmas in Wonderland? From the original publisher of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, written by debut author Carys Bexington and illustrated by star artist Kate Hindley, The Night Before Christmas in Wonderland is a fun mash-up of two classics, showing the true meaning of Christmas is to be kind.
Perfect for fans of Jim Field and Julia Donaldson, Be More Bernard is the brilliant story of a disco bunny who will encourage us all to chase our dreams and embrace our differences. When the other bunnies bounced, I bounced. When they hopped, I hopped. When they slept, I did too. Like them, I dreamed. But MY dreams weren't the same. They were less . . . rabbity. Bernard has decided that he's not going to be like all the other bunnies any more. He's not going to twitch his nose and prick his ears. And while others might dream of carrots, Bernard's dreams are altogether more...disco! He starts small, but when he finally gets to groove with grace and jive with joy at Bertie and Brenda's Bunny Ball, Bernard shows the world that being yourself is the very best thing a bunny can be. From the author of the Sainsbury's Book Award-winning You Must Bring a Hat and the illustrator of the brand-new Treacle Street series!
