"A formidable tusked serpent, crystal caves and colossal courage — this third fantastical Nkara Chronicles novel is a rip-roaring quest through South African mythology."
August 2024 Book of the Month
Yomi and the Curse of Grootslang, the third action-packed book in Davina Tijani’s fantastical Nkara Chronicles series, sees Yomi and her brother Kayode venture to South Africa with their wise Uncle Olu, who works as a researcher of Nkara creatures for the Sacred Beast League.
On arrival, the siblings are praised by a group of children — the Vilha Treasure Hunters — who’ve heard how they rescued a Senegalese dragon king and saved a city, showing courage and wit that serve them well when they join the Treasure Hunters’ quest to break a curse issued by the Grootslang, a mighty elephantine serpent.
As with Yomi’s previous adventures, there’s a great sense of working together and forming new friendships, with South African landscapes, cultures and mythology wonderfully interwoven with the all-out fantasy quest. If that wasn’t enough, Adam Douglas-Bagley’s illustrations add extra energy, with the story’s fast pace and slick dialogue also rendering Yomi and the Curse of Grootslang ideal for more reluctant readers. And, with an emergency call coming from the Congo right at the end, the stage is superbly set for the fourth instalment of the series.
