We don’t love the phrase “reluctant reader.” It suggests that a child doesn’t want to read. When in truth, they often just haven’t found the right book yet.

At LoveReading4Kids, that's our job. Like our beloved librarians and children's booksellers everywhere we believe there’s a book for every child. A book that makes them feel seen. A book that speaks to them, like no other ever has. Sometimes it’s the one that makes them giggle, sometimes it’s the one that feels easy enough to fly through, or sometimes it’s the one that speaks right to their world. The one with a character they recognise. A story they empathise with. The inspirational factual book they love to dip in and out of.

Reading isn’t about ticking boxes or hitting levels. It’s about connecting with stories. Making a child fall in love with a story, so that they're enthralled enough to pick up another book, and another one. And another.

That’s why we curate books that are what we like to call super-readable - stories designed to draw children in, not put them off. Non-fiction designed to engage the most reluctant of reader.

What Do We Mean by “Super-Readable”?

These are books that are irresistible for readers who haven’t quite clicked with reading yet.

They might feature:

  • Shorter chapters or bite-sized stories to help build confidence
  • Accessible fonts and layouts – including dyslexia-friendly formats and cream-coloured paper to reduce visual stress
  • Engaging illustrations that support understanding and sustain attention
  • Relatable plots, humour, or adventure that keep readers hooked from the first page

Super-readable books give children that all-important feeling of success. The triumphant moment that they can finish a book, enjoy it, and want to pick up the next one.

Why Some Children Struggle to Find Their Book

Children can be put off reading for all sorts of reasons:

The books available feel “too hard” or “too babyish.”

They haven’t yet found a story that reflects their interests or identity.

Reading feels like schoolwork, not fun.

They have dyslexia or another reading difficulty that makes decoding words a challenge.

They’ve missed out on regular reading routines and don’t know where to start again.

That’s why it’s so important to offer a wide range of books. From laugh-out-loud comedies to graphic novels, football adventures to verse novels. So that every child can see that reading can be for them.

Because Every Reader Deserves to Feel Seen

When a child says, “I don’t like reading,” what they often mean is, “I haven’t met the right story yet.”

Our mission at LoveReading4Kids is to change that.

Whether it’s a hi-lo adventure that makes reading feel manageable, a dyslexia-friendly edition that removes the barriers, or a funny series that keeps them turning pages — we’re here to help every child fall in love with books.

Because no child is a reluctant reader forever.

They’re simply a reader-in-waiting.

We've highlighted some of our favourite books for reluctant readers below, right across the age ranges but dive into the features above too for more recommendations. Have you got any you'd like to recommend?
