Finnegan Quick has nightmares. Not just any nightmares, these ones just happen to come true. Then, one night, he has a nightmare that his parents have gone missing, and when he wakes up, they’re gone.
It’s really fantastic to be once again thrown into the bizarre, scary and action-packed world of Finnegan Quick. The pacing in this novel is what I notice straight away because it’s books like this that keep students reading in many ways. It truly feels like you haven’t really left the world of the first novel and that is a great skill to have as a writer. Once opening the pages, I realised that I truly enjoy being in the company of Finn and his friends Squid and Cass.
And of course, Gran is a truly cool character that blends the right amount of comedic relief mixed in with being a protector. Her story arc is really well done and I enjoyed it very much. I always looked forward to a scene that contained Gran and that is something that doesn’t always happen with secondary characters.
I loved the incorporation of banshees in the novel, as a Dungeons and Dragons player and Game Master, I love using these types of creatures in the game and Hayes has brought banshees into the story in a very unique and refreshing way. They are, of course, still terrifying but Hayes has developed their story in a way that is really interesting.
Throughout the novel, we also see how Finn’s abilities impact him on a smaller level, during his day to day life. It’s refreshing to see this woven into a high octane story like this. It is an absolute perfect read for the Autumn season and it will be a highlight for Halloween in my school library. Don’t miss it!

A new nightmare. A deadly premonition.
After a horrifying vision of the future, Finnegan Quick must fix his fate before it finally catches up to him. A pulse-pounding horror story by Laugh Out Loud Book Award winner Larry Hayes.
By night, Finnegan Quick has horrible nightmares. By day, they come TRUE. Unfortunately for him, after dreaming his parents out of reality, his nightmares are the only hope he has of one day finding them again.
To discover the truth of his parents' disappearance, Finn investigates the paranormal with his best friends, Squid and Cass. Their only lead is a mysterious urban legend about a girl in Ireland whose body remained perfect, even after death. Rumour is, she was a banshee - a terrifying creature with the power of prophecy - whose unearthly scream, it was said, could drive anyone who heard it to instant madness.
That very night, Finn finds out why. In his dreams, he finds the banshee. He hears her scream and with it, sees a vision of the future.
Squid. His best friend. Face down in water, dead.
In the waking world, Finn is left with no choice: unravel the mystery of the Banshee's curse, or risk losing the only family he has left...
