May 2022 Debut of the Month

Cassie Morgan has three wishes — to have more books, to go on an adventure, and to see her mother again. So begins the intriguing opening of Skye McKenna’s magical five-book series that’s pitch-perfect for readers who loved The Worst Witch and are ready for something a dash edgier.

Seven years have passed since Cassie’s mother left. At her austere boarding school, she tries to make herself invisible while wondering about the key her mother left. It was “a treasure chest, a secret vault, the door to the home she and her mother would someday return to”. On the verge of being sent to an orphanage, Cassie seizes an opportunity to escape, determined to find her mother.

Soon after her flight, readers are drawn into the realm of the fantastical when a talking cat by the name of Montague saves Cassie from the clutches of “goblin nabbers” who are “in the business of stealing babies to sell to the gentry of Faerie”. Montague takes her to the village of Hedgely, where she meets the family she never knew existed and learns she’s from an old line of important witches - her aunt is the current Hedgewitch and protects England from the dangers of the Faerie realm.

Hedgely is conjured with chocolate-box English quaintness - think cooked breakfasts, sweet treats, village shops, opulent orchards, fragrant honeysuckle and roses. It’s a place lovers of timeless fairy tale worlds will be utterly entranced by, not least when Cassie is confronted by shapeshifters and the threat of the Erl King who wants her mother’s key. With a thrillingly twisting climax, this first book in a quest quintet will leave readers hungry for lashings more magic.

Twists, turns, danger and magic lurk in the pages of this book. Will Cassie find her missing mother and who is the warlock trying to destroy the boundary between the human and faerie worlds?

I enjoyed reading this book. It has a really interesting plot with twists and turns everywhere. Cassie, the main character is left at a boarding school by her mother who says she will be back soon. But seven years pass, her mum has still not returned and is presumed dead. Cassie is meant to go to an orphanage but she runs away. On her escape she is attacked by mystical creatures and is saved… by a talking cat and broomstick! My favourite character was Montague the cat who doesn’t like to break rules! They tell her that she has an aunt who lives in Hedgely who will take her in. Cassie finds herself in a world of magic and danger. Throughout the story, other people in Cassie’s life go missing. Will she be able to find them?... Read Full Review

An amazing tale of the Hedgewitch and her niece, Cassie Morgan!

This was a great book full of magic, friends and fun. Cassie Morgan ran away from her boring boarding school, after waiting for her mother for seven years. Suddenly she finds herself in a pickle, she is in real trouble but a talking cat and a flying broomstick. She managed to reach Hedgely (an enchanted village). There she makes friends, joins a coven, makes potions, fails to fly and explores the Hedge- oh and her Aunt is the Hedge Witch (which is super important). Her Aunt and her struggle at first to balance her Aunt's responsibility and her adventurous soul.... Read Full Review

Hedgewitch is an amazing book and is full of wonderful illustrations.

Hedgewitch is an amazing book and is full of wonderful illustrations by Tomislav Tomic that really help to bring the story to life alongside Sky McKenna’s outstanding descriptions. My favourite characters are Rue and Tabitha. Rue is funny and she is a loyal friend to Cassie, while Tabitha helps Cassie throughout the book. This book is one of my favourites and I feel so lucky to have received this book to read and review. It is jam-packed with magic, mystery and adventure. The book makes me feel excited because it always has a twist to it and you never know what will happen next. The incredible writing and descriptions make me feel like I’m in the book taking the journey with the characters. The realistic illustrations above the chapter names all show the different animals in the story.... Read Full Review
