"A practical and accessible guide that explores all key elements of the primary English curriculum."
This is such a practical and useful book. It is a book of how to prioritise, how to make decisions, and how to make research more meaningful and relevant. It covers all elements of English from the foundation stage to the end of KS2 including how to encourage reading, practical tips on teaching spelling and tips on structuring a text and sentence building.
The book is divided into manageable sized chapters with an incredibly useful contents section.
All aspects of the curriculum are explored. The book clearly pinpoints where to look for the answers you might need; so, if you didn’t want to read the book from cover to cover, or needed an answer quickly, it is easy to isolate the area you are interested in.
School culture – articulating visions – Chapter 3.
It is a very accessible book, and as a busy teacher, I so appreciate the way you can take as much or as little as you need from each section. In each chapter, there is an introduction, an interesting in depth discussion on the topic, of about 12-16 pages, and then a summary and questions for reflection. However, if you are pushed for time and what teacher isn’t, you can check in and simply check the bullet points.
For example: - How do you get the best from research?
So straightforward, so helpful. There is then the opportunity to read around the subject later by looking at the questions, the detail and the summary. Indeed, for further clarification and more in-depth support there is a fantastic link to associations, online resources and websites. At the back of the book, there is an in depth bibliography for further reading and reflection and some very interesting case studies.
This is a book without flannel; it is not patronising but at the same time it does not assume. It is of real practical help to all current and all aspiring English leaders.
