LoveReading4Kids Says

Readers opening this picturebook will find themselves in a snowy wood, shadows stretching from the trees and from the little character moving across the snow.

For as long as Sylvester can remember, the text tells us, he has always been alone. But that is about to change. On the very next spread, Sylvester spots something small and red in the snow: a little teddy bear. He takes the bear home and names her Poppy, sharing stories with her and keeping her warm at night.

Soon the two are inseparable, playing and having fun, until the day a little girl and her father find them, the little girl recognising Poppy as her lost toy. The idea of Sylvester being alone again is almost too much to bear, but there’s a surprise twist that sees the two friends home again.

It’s a tender and affecting story of lost and found, friendship, new hope and repair. The snowy scenes, crisp and silent in Grégoire Solotareff’s illustrations, are replaced on the final page with a warm, cosy bedroom scene, our two friends tucked up together and reading a story. The characters feel real throughout, giving the drama at the heart of the story added weight and I imagine young children will want to read this over and over.

In the heart of a quiet, snow-covered forest, a lone wolf named Sylvester finds solace in the stillness of winter. But his world of solitude is forever changed when he discovers a small, forgotten teddy bear beneath an ancient oak tree. Through shared adventures and quiet moments of companionship, they bring warmth and joy to each other's lives.
