Evernight

Absolutely incredible. Full of magic and mystery.

Absolutely incredible, it was full of magic and mystery. It was an incredible read and I enjoyed it immensely. I would recommend this to anyone who is a fan of mystery and adventure novels.

Wow, just wow! You HAVE to read this book, it is soooooo good.

Oh my goodness this book is just so good!! I could not read it fast enough, but I didn’t ever want to finish it. I loved the world that Lara and her friends live in. It sounds a bit like London in Victorian times. I love fantasy stories and this one was so original. I really liked the idea of the wands and potions that were in the book. Instead of just a fancy stick that you ‘swish and flick’, the wands in Evernight have a barrel that has to be loaded with spells from bottles.

The descriptions are so great, you really feel like you are actually there in the world. I didn’t want to leave. I kept thinking to myself ‘just one more chapter’ but I really couldn’t put it down.

This is one of the best books I have read in a very long time and I really hope that if it gets turned into a movie (it’s better than HP in my opinion) if they keep to all the story and don’t mess it up.

I am sure there will be another adventure for Lara and I really CAN. NOT. WAIT for it to come out.

READ THIS BOOK EVERYONE, you will love it!

I loved the dark magic in this imaginative book that really kept me on my toes.

Evernight is a really imaginative book about a girl called Lara who works as a Tosher, looking for treasures in the underground sewers and selling them on. One day she comes across a little box which opens up for her a whole new world of magic and so that adventure begins.

I really loved this book because I didn't know what would happen next. It had a really good storyline like no other book I had read.

I think it was a bit dark in places and so for that reason, I wouldn't recommend it to children under 10 and even then a sensitive 10-year-old might find it scary.

The second half of the book I found the best and the cover is just spot on. A really good read

Larabelle Fox, a girl in a magical world, is caught up in a tense adventure against an evil witch who wants to control the world. Larabelle finds the one thing that Mrs Hester the evil witch is looking for and so becomes hunted by Shadow Jack, a man who casts no shadow and is prepared to kill all those that stand in his way. I enjoyed the way it transported me to a different world of magic and was gripped by the tense story - I recommend you to read it!!

This book is about a girl called Larabelle Fox who lives in a magical world collecting lost items and selling them to make enough money to live. She is an orphan who sleeps anywhere she can including the sewers. She is the brave heroine of the story. The evil witch Mrs Hester is the advisor of the King and she wants to find the doomsday spell so she can control the Evernight. Meanwhile, Larabelle Fox comes across a box which she later discovers is the doomsday spell. Mrs Hester then sets to find Larabelle and get the box from her.

The start of the story is scary and tense. In fact, quite a lot of the story is scary, especially the character Shadow Jack who searches for the spell and kills anyone who gets in his way. It is a story of good versus evil with lots of magic. Larabelle thinks she is just a regular person but she finds out that this is not the case.

Loved this book, it's fun and magic and action-packed and I recommend it to all old and young.

I loved reading this book, it's amazing. It's ram-packed full of action and magic. I love all the main characters Lara is so brave, Double Eight is very likeable and Mrs Hester and her evil Djinn are great in an evil, sinister way.

I enjoyed the world that Evernight is set in and I hope that there will be more books to create a series.

Dickens meets Harry Potter. A dark and eerily believable magical adventure.

I was excited to review this book, having read the review in the Sunday Times, Best children's books of 2020. As a teacher, I read with my mind on the type of child that would enjoy the book. From the first two chapters, I realised that whoever read Evernight needed to be quite robust and not prone to nightmares.

It was one of the most descriptive and vivid books I have read. The characters are brilliantly portrayed. Mrs Hester and Shadow Jack were eerily real and the 'soulless' white witches believably sad.

The setting reminded me of a darker and magical version of Dickensian England. Throughout the quite scary and graphically descriptive story comes a strong message of Good triumphing over evil. The characters of Lara and Joe give the book a gentler human element and their bravery and determination, a theme children can relate to. Despite its dark side, it is a story of hope and victory. An exciting read.

This is an enjoyable, deep story that I couldn't put down. I also love the fabulous illustration on the book cover.

I really enjoyed this mysterious tale because: the way it draws everything together, the setting and the characters. They were all from different backgrounds (Lara a tosher, Double eight from factory) but when they came together they were strong.Lara started as a street 'tosher' but her journey changed her into a different person.
This is a enjoyable, deep story that I couldn't put down.
I also love the fabulous illustration on the book cover.

The plot was exiting and engaging, I couldn’t put it down.

Evernight is about an orphan girl called Lara Fox, who lives by herself and makes her money from the sewers and the things in them. But, the evernight is coming, and when Lara finds a strange box, she’s thrust into a new world with friends and enemies and a man with no shadow. I really enjoyed reading this, it kept me on my toes and always went in the direction I least expected. The plotline was really exciting and interesting. All of it was explained clearly and I could understand what was happening at all times. I would definitely recommend reading it, all the characters made sense and while being sad at times it was engaging and an exhilarating read.

An absolute cracker, brimming with magic, daring escapades and intriguing characters. Evernight is a completely gripping, fast-paced tale of adventure that will enchant and excite readers.

There is so much to like about this book. Ross MacKenzie certainly knows how to weave a tale that will draw in the reader and make them want to keep reading until the story’s ultimate end. It was fascinating learning about the world of toshing in the streets far below the streets above. It’s where we first meet Larabelle and her friend Joe as she is saving him from a gang of bullies intent on taking his loot. I loved the fascinating mix of characters, among them, the White Witches, whose souls have been locked away, the Hags who everyone fears, Shadow Jack and the evil Mrs Hester. Lara and her friends get caught up in the ultimate struggle for survival and it’s up to her to save the day and defeat the Evernight. I would highly recommend this book and I really hope that there will be a sequel.
