Hop the Kangaroo Dog

A great way to have fun reading with children.

Loved the illustrations in this. The rhyme is great and of course the moral of the story. A great way to have fun reading with children.

Hop the Kangaroo Dog is a fun and colourful read with great messages.

Hop the Kangaroo Dog is a fun and colourful read with great messages. The pages are packed with detail and interest which make it a lovely book to share with a small person. Stories in rhyme are always popular with young children who love to guess or remember the last word, though in places I think the sentences are a little long and clumsy with a few too many syllables. The main message of the story is that taking part and not winning is what is important. I am not sure this message would appeal to an Olympian or World Cup participant, but to be included and feel part of the team was what was important to Hop. Indeed we all like to feel included. I loved the way she won the support of the other animals along the way, from the grinning snake to the cheering penguins. The other message of course is that you can achieve something when you really try, illustrated by Hop's amazingly huge hop to the finish line. A book with lots of positive themes, life and positivity.

This is really sweet.

This is really sweet. I loved the illustrations and I'm sure little ones will love them too as they are bold and bright. It's written in rhyme which flows easily and isn't contrived. The story is about Hop's determination to overcome her difficulties and the innovative methods she uses. She learns that there is more than one way to reach your goal and that it's the trying that's important. I'd definitely buy this book for the little ones in my life.

Great for reading aloud or for slightly older children to read themselves, this story shows that we can't all be good at everything and we must celebrate our differences...

'Hop the Kangaroo Dog' is Cherise Cross and illustrator partner Francois Arnaud's first children's picture book, with 2 more already in the pipeline. For once a good thing to come out of lockdown, the couple were inspired to start writing when their other work dried up, this is definitely a winner for young readers. The story is written in rhyme with a bouncy rhythm to suit the subject matter and beautifully illustrated in colourful detail.

Hop is the adopted daughter of kangaroo parents and, when old enough, expects to be able to do what the 'other' joeys do. Of course, disappointment follows but then one day a race is organised. Determined not to be left behind, Hop uses all her wits to try to win the race. In the end, she doesn't win but realises that she has many talents and that doing your best and taking part is what really matters.

This book is inspirational and encourages young readers to appreciate what they can do and not worry too much about what they find difficult. Great for reading aloud or for slightly older children to read themselves, this story shows that we can't all be good at everything and we must celebrate our differences...I'm sure it will become a firm favourite!
