I bought this book for my great niece and nephews, who loved it. I was taken by the attention to detail and imagination: it really feels like they go on a wonderful trip together.
This little book is so well thought out. Every page is full of highly individual illustrations, it's like a mini work of art that is bound to stimulate a child's imagination. It has been designed to be read aloud as it trips off the tongue delightfully, with pleasing rhythms. The relationship between Gwinnie the little mouse in the meadow and her dad Billy is such a tender one, he is a model dad! They really have fun and Gwinnie's friends are in that wonderful imaginative realm that helps to inspire a love of nature too in a child. This is the kind of book that can be told quickly or can be lingered over, where the adult can ask questions about the scenes: to stimulate the child's imagination, increase vocabulary or develop thinking skills. Gwinnie manages to convey the power of imagination through the metaphor of an aeroplane ride and in this way, her imagination gives her the powers of her friends Zinnie and Mustardseed. The night-time scene towards the end where she is missing her mum is a scene full of heart, that can gently take a child through some of the more difficult moments in life but all handled with impeccable skill by this author. Every child's bedroom and school library needs a Gwinnie!
