Mark Garlick on Mark Garlick:
I am a freelance illustrator and author, specialising in earth sciences, technology, astronomy and space.
I have a degree in astronomy from University College London (UCL), and a PhD in astrophysics from the Mullard Space Science Laboratory. After I finished my PhD, I did three years of research at Sussex University, specialising in close binary stars called cataclysmic binaries. But by the time I reached the end of my contract, it had become clear that professional astronomy was not for me, and I decided on a career change.
Now, self trained in illustration, I run a company called Mark Garlick Words and Pictures Ltd. Since 1996 I have written and illustrated five of my own books, and my images have appeared in their hundreds in other books, publications and in advertising. I welcome your commissions.
For budding astronomers and space enthusiasts this is the ultimate guide. Spectacular and state-of-the-art, this is the ultimate guide to the known universe. It is packed with dazzling images and unbelievable statistics including maps from our Solar System to the outer edges of space, constellation charts, cross-sections of asteroids and meteorites, images that capture exploding supernovas and distant galaxies. This book contains everything you need to know to navigate the night sky and to know all there is to know about the furthest reaches of the cosmos. It comes complete with a fold out poster of the universe and a CD, from which you’ll be able to print out lots of images found in the book. There is also a Children’s Encyclopedia of Earth in the same Templar ‘Insiders’ series and a Children’s Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs
The bodies of our solar system have orbited continuously around the Sun since their formation, but they have not always been there, and conditions have not always been as they are today. The Story of the Solar System explains how our solar system came into existence, how it has evolved and how it might end billions of years from now. After a brief historical introduction, the book illustrates the birth of the Sun, and then explains the steps that built up the bodies of the Solar System. Using vivid illustrations, the planets, moons, asteroids and comets are described in detail. Comparison of these objects, and analysis of how they have changed and evolved since birth, is followed by a look towards the end of the solar system's existence. Fully illustrated with beautiful, astronomically accurate paintings, this book will fascinate anyone with an interest in our solar system.
